So, you’re attending the Orange Conference this year. You will not be disappointed. There are leaders from all over the world who come from near and far to learn, grow, and network with people who are trying to connect with families in a new way related to the local church. So, while you’re here you definitely don’t want a “Normal” experience. You want to make the most of it — so, here are 4 ways you can be “Not Normal” at the Orange Conference 2016!
1. Don’t miss the small things that can make a big difference.
So often we look for big moments that are going to change our lives. Those moments are important but don’t happen too often. Small moments happen all the time and the fact of the matter is, we tend to think that those moments don’t mean as much — but they do. Don’t miss the small moments at the Orange Conference this year. Maybe it’s a…
Cup of coffee with a fellow volunteer
Conversation in a hallway between sessions
That breakout that you signed up for last minute
Vendor that you stop by to have a conversation with
We tend to those think these moments don’t really matter that much. But when you realize how much these moments have the potential to mean, you tend to look for them more and view them in a different light. Those small moments actually have the potential to have the biggest results — not normal results. Don’t miss them.
2. Above all else, be an owner, not a renter.
Have you ever rented a car? I have. I love when the rental car employee asks me if I am interested in the insurance. I rented a car in Birmingham, AL last year and I asked the employee “If I get the insurance what can I do to the car?” He replied, “You could bring back a steering wheel for all I care.” I immediately made the purchase! The point is, you would never do that to a car you own, but when you rent something you simply don’t care as much. There is a huge difference.
At this conference, be an owner, not a renter. At OC16 - owners are those special people who are there because they believe so deeply in what they do each week and they want to do it even better.
They are the ones who…
Pick up a piece of trash if they see it
Take notes during their sessions to help them when they get home
Help someone from another country find their way if they are lost
Owners understand that this is not a conference that is just ‘put on’ — this is a conference that they can experience. This conference is theirs. Not just a random event that they care nothing about. That’s what owners do.
3. Make sure to honor the leader of your group!
If you are traveling in a group, whether the group is a small group or a large group, someone helped coordinate this trip. It wasn’t easy either. A few years back I took a group of 35 to The Orange Conference and served as the group coordinator. It was a lot of work! I had to set up..
Rental Car reservations (including who is riding with who)
Airline tickets (hopefully you weren’t delayed!)
And that’s just to name a few!
Even if the person who is your group leader is a paid staff member like I was, it still is above and beyond the call of duty to become a mini-event planner for a group of people in another city!
Make sure to honor them, not ruffling up the plans, and make sure to thank them along the way! That will go a long way to make your experience “Not Normal.”
4. Understand that you can’t immediately see the impact that this event had on you.
The Orange Conference is going to impact you in many ways. Some of those ways you are going to be able to see immediately. They are going to be clear as day. But some of the ways you won’t be able to see for years to come.
What you need to do is just make a mental note that everything you see, everything you do, and everything you hear might not have an immediate impact. You might spend some time asking yourself — “How is this going to impact me?”
I remember the first time I saw a Family Experience showcase I thought - “Why did I even watch that? I mean it is awesome but i’ll never be able pull that off.” Years later, not only did we pull it off, but we had two going in multiple locations! And I remembered back to that very moment. You’re never going to see the impact that this event had on you right away. That’s ok. Soak it all in and keep looking back at those notes so the future for your ministry can be different and impactful in your community.
